The matrix view in Qubicle 1.x has it's own way of shading. Actually there is no light at all in matrix mode the shading is calculated by Qubicle and not the graphics card. In model mode you have a global light which you can adjust with via Settings > Global Light. Try to tweak those settings until you are satisfied.
The light has no effect on export only on render

Tim I think you should disable this by default, I've never used it and I doubt many people want it either.

The global light will be replaced by light sources like you know them from other 3d software. Coming with 2.0
